What Colors Does Your Baby See?
From infant to toddler, parents are always interested in learning what they can about their children. What often comes up in conversation is what their child can actually see. This includes color, sense of depth and even clarity as you will find each occurs over the first four months that they are alive.
When they are newborns, your infant will have considerable trouble seeing. In generally, if anything is more than 7 inches away from their face, they will begin to pick it up. Ideally, it should be closer than a foot if you plan on entertaining them. During this time, color is indistinguishable and everything comes in light and dark. Typically bright colors and high contrast toys will be easiest for them to see, however the light and dark colors will all blend together in their eyes.
By the time they reach their second month, the infant will begin to pick on new aspects of vision. You may notice them start to stare at items, but there is never intent to actually go and grab them. Textures are starting to appear in the vision and the shapes they see can captivate their interest for a long time. During this time, you will want to be sure you exposing them to enough visual stimulation so their eyes can continue to develop.
Once your infant hits the two month marker, then are going to start to pick up on new things. Their vision will be able to hand three dimensions and you will begin to notice that they pay attention to moving items as well. During this stage they may go and attempt to grab things and hold on to them and become more active.
At 3 months and through the time that they become a toddler, they are going to begin to fine tune their vision. At the 3 month market, they will be able to see all the colors that are presented to them and the various shades and hues will be noticeable in items at this point. Red and green are perhaps the two colors that will stand out most to them and you will find that they pick up on these colors faster than others.
Month four is the last stage of the major changes in vision that your child will experience. It will be this time that their eyes begin to function in a more active style. Distance and colors can blend together and they begin to see several items at once. Brightly colored toys and other objects will begin to captivate their attention and last well past the time your child becomes a toddler.
There is little doubt that the changes in vision your child goes through are among the most interesting changes that you will experience with them. It will be important that you locate sensory toys for them to play with that help to stimulate their new vision. That will also help their curiosity as well as it continues to their toddler years.
