Playing with Puzzles is Fun and Beneficial

For years now, many scientists and health experts claim that playing with jigsaw puzzles can enhance your child's brain development. This educational toy helps in improving your child moods to lessen temperaments and tantrums, and at the same time improves his/her attention span as it teaches your child to be patient.

Wooden puzzles can also increase your child's creativity since it challenges him/her to locate the pieces that needed to be placed together in order to solve the puzzle. It enhances color and object recognition, especially among toddlers as young as three-years old. Moreover, puzzles can have long-term effects too since it develops your child's common sense and promotes eye-hand coordination.

Types of jigsaw puzzles

Not all puzzles are the same. You will see a whole lot of them here and they all vary in size depending on the age of the player. Puzzles for toddlers and children aged 3 to 6" usually are larger so that they can easily manipulate the pieces together. While jigsaw puzzles for older children aged 6 to 8 are smaller and the images are a bit complicated than puzzles for toddlers.

Most jigsaw puzzles are very colorful. They were created like this to promote fast learning of pictures and colors among children. There are also some jigsaw puzzles that feature alphabet letters to help your child know the letters well through a very fun-filled activity.

How to encourage your child to start playing with puzzles

Just like in other games, the first step is to encourage your child to play with puzzles. You two can shop together on MyToySmart so that he/she can pick out the jigsaw puzzles that he/she wants to solve. Your child may have preferences like he/she likes cartoon-themed jigsaw puzzles more than those that feature sceneries. By allowing your child to select the puzzles that he/she wants, you are motivating him/her in playing puzzles.

Prompt other family members to invite your child to play his/her new puzzles with them. If your child is having a hard time locating a certain piece, try your best to guide him/her but never reveal the answer. Give out clues about the shape of the puzzle or the picture featured in it. Through this, you are encouraging your child to work hard and persevere.

What to do with finished puzzles?

After your child has completed his/her very first jigsaw puzzle masterpiece, do not crumble the pieces together. Instead, glue them, paint some clear coat, and have it framed. This will delight your child because you can tack it to walls of his/her room. This will give your child a sense of accomplishment and will prompt him/her to do better not just in playing with jigsaw puzzles, but in everything that he/she does in the future.

Little things like displaying your child's work can add a lot to his/her self-confidence. It will also promote other good qualities in him/her. Solving jigsaw puzzles is not merely just about letting your child put the pieces together to finish it. It has a deeper meaning to it because your child gets to practice his/her problem-solving capacities as well as his/her logic. This will help him/her perform better in school because he/she knows how they are going to properly deal with all your child's everyday tasks.
